Our work with KPMG went back to 2015, when we were approached to cut a teaser video for a white paper they were releasing called “The Clock Speed” dilemma. It was a small budget project and a new area for us entirely, but the edit we came up with was great - maybe not the MOST polished piece in existence, but it got our foot in the door to work with KPMG consistently over the next decade, where we made some truly great cuts, working with different sectors and teams of the KPMG Family (Tech, Audit, ESG, etc.). The territory the client occupied allowed for some interesting projects to get into, ranging from heavily choreographed motion graphics ensembles, to metaphorical, story-based CG pieces.
Side note: KPMG stands for “Klynveld, Peat, Marwick, & Goerdeler”
Everybody In
This is one of my favorite cuts that we have done for KPMG over the years. The graphics, music, and visuals are all coregraphed in a way that makes you feel like there’s “momentum” building. KPMG’s messaging can often be somewhat dry, and a little confusing, so finding a way to clearly communicate, but also keep the energy up, is always a battle. I think this cut delivers on all level, though.
Humans Empowered
Humans Empowered was MONSTER. The cut itself is very long for what it is - finding a way to appropriately convey 1 minute and 45 seconds of ‘tech talk’ that doesn’t put you to sleep is a tall order, but I think we crushed it. The biggest hurdle here was the musical alignment - audio editing/production has always been a passion of mine, and this cut was a challenge, for sure. I spent hours and hours of time editing and re-editing the music to coincide with exact cue points in the edit, so it video felt like everything was “in-sync”. Difficult to do on a normal day - VERY difficult to do with a nearly 2 minute piece with scores of cut points. I could tinker endlessly with this thing, but I think we netted out in a really great zone.
Digital Transformations
Out of all the KPMG projects we touched, Digital Transformations was by far my favorite. It also exposed me to more 3D/CG/simulation-based workflows, which was really valuable. If you’ve ever worked in this medium, you know there is a delicate process you need to adhere to - it’s almost like putting a Christmas Tree up: you stand it up, solidify the base, weave strings of lights through it, and THEN accent with ornaments. If you try it in reverse, you’re gonna have a bad time. Copy: Andy Hall
Elephant came first, but Spider is my favorite
Audit Anthem
Like “Humans Empowered”, Audit Anthem had similar hurdles. What I love about this particular cut is the incorporation of the stills. Cutting between moving visuals, and a quick montages of stills really kept the energy and interest on full blast. I also felt like the color grading came together really nicely on this piece. We ended up with an elevated, interesting, eye catching spot that positioned KPMG as an Audit Champion. Just what the doctor (client?) ordered.
